Detroit Holds Electronic Waste Recycling Event

Hopefully, this weekend's electronic waste recycling event won't be the first in Detroit. As with many large cities in the U.S., Detroit, Michigan certainly has its share of unwanted electronics, from computers to laptops to printers through to televisions. The question is: What does everyone do with their unwanted electronics? Goodwill Industries of Greater Detroit joined forced with the Oakland County Campus in Pontiac on Saturday to begin collecting electronic waste, also known as "e-waste". Lindsay Chalmers, Director of Business Development for Goodwill, said: "Anything related to a computer, to a PC, in other words it can be a monitor, keyboard, some ... Full Story

Environment Agency May Have Passed the Buck

Environmentalists are up in arms over reports that the UK's electronic waste is being illegally shipped and dumped to West Africa. They are even more enraged because the government hasn't done anything to prevent it. The Environment Agency (EA) is the agency responsible for enforcing the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) directive. Part of that job includes making sure that the e-waste is recycled or disposed using environmental best practices. Recently, the international environmental group Greenpeace showed that there were UK companies dumping waste in parts of Ghana and Nigeria. According to Greenpeace's report, discarded electronics from UK councils and ... Full Story

India is Drowning in Electronic Waste

Greenpeace is trying to reduce the number of old computers being tossed by the roadside but is restricted by the lack of India's laws on electronic waste. Discarded computers are often seen on the street where they will be picked apart by an unorganized group of people searching for valuable components. Whatever is left over after the scavenging simply gets left behind or ends up in a dump or landfill. E-waste is highly toxic to the environment, including the soil and groundwater but that is not Greenpeace's only issue. Young children are being used to take apart the computers thereby ... New Film Promotes Laptop Recycling

E-Donor, on behalf of ad agency Goodby Silverstein & Partners, recently produced a film that shows the beauty and wonder of recycling. There is no script for the film, simply a montage of an abandoned laptop being magically converted into a tricycle for a child. People who have viewed the film have called it "emotional". The message is, of course, how old technology can be reincarnated into something entirely new and perhaps something that has no relationship at all to the original product. Hence, the tricycle. The opening of the film shows a dusty and clutter filled garage. Suddenly, the viewer ... Full Story
