British recycling awards celebrate their tenth anniversary

Scotland launches new Recycling Awards

Recycle Week is being celebrated this week across the UK and Scotland will be participating with its own line up of special events. In Scotland, the week marked the launch of the 2008 Scottish Waste Resources Awards. The Awards were organized by Eventful Scotland. The Awards are designed to recognize and reward the best practices in the Scottish sectors of waste, recycling and resource management, as well as innovations in those areas. Cornwall e-waste company awarded again

A company based n Cornwall was recently awarded its third awards scheme in the past year, earning a hat trick for the WEEE processing company. The Electronic Waste Company’s Managing Director was the award recipient. Damian Lambkin was named the Young Business Person of the Year this year in the Cornwall Business awards. Last year, the British Chamber of Commerce named the Electronic Waste Company the "Most Promising New Business" in the region. Loughborough’s recycling offers a good lesson

Students at Loughborough are becoming increasingly aware of their environmental impact, in part because of the work of their student’s union. Steve Black, the union’s vice president of finance and commercial services, said: “We aren’t just aiming our environmental policy at our own staff, but the whole student population of Loughborough.” The union’s environmental activities, Black explained, encompass not only the 14,000 students in attendance at the educational institution, but also the 4,000 attending college courses in the city, and 1,000 distance learners. School scoops recycling awards

Students in schools throughout Flintshire have won prestigious awards for their contribution in making the county greener by recycling old Yellow Pages directories. Six schools throughout Flintshire were awarded as part of the countrywide Yellow Woods recycling scheme, run by Yellow pages. The Yellow Woods recycling scheme encourages students throughout the United Kingdom to amass as many old copies of the Yellow Pages and take them to their respective schools for recycling. Winners of recycling awards announced

The list of those who scooped the ‘More Than Recycling’ Awards which is run by Community Recycling Network for Scotland has been made public. Among those who walked away with prizes at the award ceremony which was held in Perth included Highland Council, Enviroglass and Moray Recycling Action Group's Green Home initiative. The aim of the ‘More Than Recycling’ Awards is to acknowledge initiatives that had a big impact in 2007 on recycling in the Scottish community. Nominees for the Green Watch Heroes Awards have been received and are representative of all sections of the society. The nominees include educational institutions, business organisations and even families. The awards are being run by Gazette Newspapers in conjunction with Southern Electric, a local supplier of electricity. Council in the running for a recycling award

A recycling service operated by Falkirk Council has achieved tremendous success and has been picked for a major recycling award. Falkirk Council is a contender for the local authority partnership award during this year’s Community Recycling Network for Scotland awards which are held annually. Falkirk Council together with Action Recycle has been able to ensure the provision of a waste recycling collection service to nine-tenths of all multi-occupancy properties in its area of jurisdiction. LiveEarth, Denmark’s Roskilde Festival and the Paleo Festival Nyon Win ‘Green’ Awards

At the Midem Green World Awards in Cannes, France will honour three of the world’s largest music concerts, LiveEarth, Denmark’s Roskilde Festival, and Paleo Festival Nyon.  The awards recognise festivals that have promoted a greater awareness of environmental issues. LiveEarth set a goal to create “green guidelines” in order to create a “low-impact” event.  The concert series was featured around the world, and included a show at London’s Wembley stadium.  The concert series took place in July 2007, and the show’s theme was to create awareness of climate change.
