Lexmark Helps Reduce Carbon Footprint

There are many printer companies that are choosing to step up and take action toward reducing the amount of waste being generated in the workplace. Among those companies is Lexmark, printer and ink cartridge manufacturer. According to Lexmark marketing manager Stephen Bell, the international company has placed its focus on “reducing the environmental impact throughout the lifecycle of its printers”. This includes all processes from dust to dust.

In a recent statement, Bell stated that nearly 80% of the negative environmental impact from printers occurs during usage. Therefore, the company has joined together with its business customers to review company printing habits and to develop possible solutions for decreasing output.

Sometimes the best solutions start with small steps. For example, one of the simplest solutions to paper waste is to print on both sides of a sheet of paper. Two sided printing, known as duplexing, can significantly decrease the amount of paper being used throughout the organisation. Another option is to use electronic means to transmit documents in house or to clients and colleagues, where applicable. Not only does it cut down on paper and ink costs, even if the items being used are recycled. It also saves from having an unsightly pile of paper on the desktop.

Bell refers to the retail sector, where significant savings can be made if signage is sent electronically to stores. Stores can print the necessary items as needed instead of picking through pre-printed materials, some of which may end up being tossed. “The same approach can work for things like letterhead, documents and forms,” he says.

“Printing these things as needed means that lots of pre-printed sheets won’t go out of date and have to be thrown away.”
