Verizon Wireless Goes into Green Politics

The big news in the U.S. this week is the Democratic National Convention in Denver, Colorado. The convention is designed as a political platform that will ultimately choose one of the next presidential candidates. Verizon Wireless is taking the opportunity to work with the expanded population of Denver to promote mobile phone recycling. In fact, Verizon claims that the convention will be “the greenest political gathering in history”.

Verizon Wireless refers to a study conducted by the EPA, which states that recycling 100 million mobile phones would conserve enough energy to power almost 200,000 U.S. households for an entire year.

“We’re not there yet, but the good news is more and more old cell phones are being recycled every year,” said Melanie Braidich, regional president for Verizon Wireless. “Since we launched our national cellphone recycling program in 2001, we have kept more than 200 tons of electronic waste out of landfills.”

Verizon Wireless is making a point to encourage the assembled delegates and other convention attendants to donate an unwanted mobile phone or wireless accessories to the company’s HopeLine(R) programme. The programme accepts donations year round at any of their Verizon Wireless Communications Stores in Denver. Donated items, including batteries and other accessories will be collected and refurbished or reused with the phones being donated to survivors of domestic violence. The items that cannot be salvaged will be disposed of in an environmentally responsible way.
