Samsung is a company that has long been associated with various electronics, including mobile phones. As a step toward environmental awareness and responsibility, Samsung has recently launched a new eco-friendly series of mobile phones. The phones are eco-friendly in the sense that they are manufactured using bio-plastic materials for the handsets’ exterior construction and various recycled materials used for packaging. The series consists of three models, including the F268, which was introduced in China in July; the W510, also released in July in the Korean market; and the latest model, the E200 Eco just launched in Europe.
As a part of Samsung’s ongoing commitment to the environment, it is in the process of developing a “more renewable and eco-friendly material” that is comparable to traditional plastic. Also in development are a type of micro fuel cells that can be used to power handsets with hydrogen.
Samsung officials have released statements saying that 40-50% of the three mobile phones’ exterior structures are manufactured using natural-dissolved bio-plastic, a combination of traditional plastics and a material that is produced using corn starch. Additionally, none of the phones’ circuit boards contain BFR (brominated flame retardants) or polyvinyl chlorides, two highly toxic substances that negatively affect the environment.
The company’s first “green” mobile phone is the W510, a model made without any of the traditional heavy metals, such as mercury, lead, and cadmium. It also has a water soluble coating.
Geesung Choi, president of Samsung’s telecommunication business, said, “Now we are trying not only to launch more environmentally-conscious products with more renewable material and less energy consumption, but also proactively set up a phone recycling system.”
