The U.S. Government Printing Office (GPO) has announced the appointment of Paul Erickson as Deputy Public Printer. The position entails printing procurement, preparation and dissemination of informational materials for Congress, all federal agencies and the general public. Erickson will also be responsible for handling the GPO’s Security and Intelligent Documents division, which is responsible for producing U.S. passports. Erickson will also assist in the implementation of the Official Journals of Government business unit. This new division will supervise print and electronic requests for the country’s two federal daily newspapers, The Congressional Record and The Federal Register.
“I believe working together as a team is critical to becoming a successful operation,” said Erickson in a statement from the GPO. “The values I learned from my family, teachers, coaches and teammates in Minnesota will be beneficial in managing the talented employees at GPO.”
Erickson has a long and illustrious career in the printing industry. His tenure started with RR Donnelley, the largest commercial printer in existence. Erickson spent 25 years in management positions. Moving from Donnelley, Erickson went to work as a managing director for a printing firm in Sheffield, England. While in the UK, Erickson saved his company millions of dollars through the implementation of recycling programs including the reduction of paper and ink waste. There is hope that Erickson will continue to educate the public on various topics from waste reduction to ink cartridge recycling and the use of soy based products.
“Paul is a proven leader in the printing industry. GPO is looking forward to tapping into his successful record for reducing waste, improving customer service and increasing production output,” said Public Printer Bob Tapella. “Paul’s background and accomplishments will be an asset to GPO as the agency adapts to new technologies in providing Americans the documents of their democracy.”
