SEPA Fines Man for Storing Waste

Mr. Ronald Noble Mentiplay has learned that storing waste without a waste management licence is a big no-no. Mentiplay, a businessman in Fife, was fined £2,750 for the recent violation. Mr. Mentiplay had come before the same court on a previous, similar charge regarding the failure to comply with a government notice ordering him to remove the waste from his site near Saline. Mentiplay pled guilty to the initial charge.

The SEPA gave Mentiplay plenty of warning about this issue. The environmental organisation first served Mentiplay with a notice on 14 August 2007. The notice required that the controlled waste be removed from the site 15 October 2007. Mentiplay did not comply. Further visits by SEPA officials showed no improvements on the situation.

Carrie Stein, investigating officer for SEPA said: “SEPA officers had been trying to work with Mr. Mentiplay in the months leading up to the issuing of the notice in August 2007. SEPA always tries to work with business and industry to protect the environment but will take steps against those who refuse to do so. This case would have been avoided if Mr. Mentiplay had removed the waste within the required timescales.”

SEPA’s Director of Environmental Protection and Improvement Colin Bayes said: “We want to help people avoid pollution and advice on how to do that is easily available from our staff, offices and www.sepa.org.uk. The NetRegs website, www.netregs.gov.uk, also offers clear guidance on environmental rules and regulations.”
