New Texas Recycling Law Goes into Effect in September

Free electronics “take-back” programmes are springing up all around the globe. The recycling and/or proper disposal of electronic waste, or e-waste, is crucial to protecting the environment. Electronics contain a number of toxic chemicals and non-biodegradable materials that could wreak havoc if placed into a landfill.

However, there are still many companies that are not pulling their weight in the environmental arena, so local and national governments are stepping in.

For example, in the southern U.S. state of Texas, a take-back law will go into effect on September 1st. The legislation will require any computer store or outlet to provide a free take-back programme. The law, which covers such items as desktop and laptop computers, monitors, keyboards and peripherals, will also make it easier for consumers to recycle.

Currently, the law only applies to computers purchased primarily for personal or home business use. Retailers will not be required to accept items from larger businesses or educational facilities. Manufacturers may restrict their programmes to their own brands.

The law also states that the companies can choose how to operate their programmes. Some options include creating permanent drop-off boxes or sites, arranging special collection events or even creating a return by mail system.

Residents in search of a place to drop off or recycle their old electronic waste may check with the EPA or visit such sites as Earth 911, a programme dedicated to delivering local information on recycling centres and programmes.
