About 110 people attended a recent Sudbury council meeting to raise concerns about a new proposal that would provide a common site for composting.
The issue residents are rallying against wasn’t on the agenda at the meeting, but it didn’t stop them from protesting.
“The purpose of the rally is to continue to impress upon the local municipal council that people are not in agreement with (the rezoning bylaw), which creates a waste recycling site… at the headwaters of the Pine River,” said Roly Bertrand, co-chair of the French River Citizens Action Committee.
In August, French River council approved an application by Halton Recycling Ltd. to rezone 330 acres of land on Highway 535, about four kilometres north of Noelville, for waste management.
Halton Recycling has been attempting to clear the air of some of the rumours going around about the proposal. For example, spokesman Jack McGinnis said the proposal is not to develop a dump.
“Halton Recycling is a recycling company, not a waste company,” he said.
Other rumours were that the site would be for Toronto’s compost. McGinnis said the company has not decided where the compost would come from yet.
It would be better if the compost came from green bin composting programs that may be developed at municipalities in the area, he said.
McGinnis said the development would not have an impact on the water. “We’d be under very tight controls with the Ministry of the Environment and Ministry of Natural Resources,” he said.
