Wright Appointed President of Recycling Association

The British Metal Recycling Association (BMRA) has chosen Michael Wright to take over as president for its organisation. Wright will assume the duties of his predecessor, Metal and Waste Recycling’s Peter Brookes, who served as president for three years.

The BMRA is a UK based trade association representing the £4 billion UK metal recycling sector and routinely expresses its members’ views to local and national government.

Currently, Wright is the chief operating officer of the Sheffield-based recycling company ELG Haniel and also serves as the chairman of the group’s UK operations and the Bureau of International Recycling stainless steel and alloy committee.

Michael Wright started his metal recycling career in 1966 with the Thomas W. Ward company in Sheffield. In 1981, he became one of the four co-founders of ELG Metals, where he subsequently became the firm’s managing director.

After six years in that position, Wright was appointed to the Board of Directors of the German-based ELG Haniel group. Along with the new title and appointment came global responsibilities.

In 2001 Wright was appointed as chair of the ELG Haniel’s UK operations as well as being named chief operating officer of ELG Haniel. Among Wright’s new duties is the weighty responsibility for worldwide purchasing and company operations at 40 locations.

“Metal recycling in the UK is a business worth £5 billion that contributes a significant amount to the UK economy and plays a critical role in the country’s ability to hit its EU recycling targets,” said Mr. Wright in an interview with The Star.
