ReCellular Raises Capital to Improve Services

ReCellular is one of the world’s foremost mobile phone recycling companies based in the U.S. As part of an effort to improve its already successful business, ReCellular has raised a staggering $15 million from Investor Growth Capital in what it calls its first round of fundraising.

ReCellular’s vision for the funds is to expand its current operation and raise its annual recycling rate of 25%. The recycling rate is already quite acceptable but the company has its sights set on recycling more than 6 million phones. In order to do so, ReCellular has formed strategic alliances with major mobile phone industry companies such as Sprint, Motorola, and Verizon Wireless.

Another part of the effort to reach the lofty goal is to educate consumers on mobile phone recycling and what it’s all about. Through the ReCellular programme, consumers may purchase, donate or sell their old phones. This includes similar products such as PDAs and Blackberrys as well as mobile phone accessories. Customers can also visit the site to purchase chargers, components, and batteries. The phones on sale at ReCellular are categorized into price ranges while some may be sold in bulk to wholesale companies.

Unlike some other companies that simply offer remanufacturing of old handsets, ReCellular has joined in with other “Ownership 2.0″ companies like TechForward, Gazelle and Flipswap to target a younger, high tech base that is prone to upgrading and switching phones on a regular basis. The sale of refurbished phones is also a draw to an even younger crowd who isn’t quite ready for high end equipment.
