With September fast approaching, many have turned their thoughts to school and sending their children off to university. While these activities may seem all consuming, thinking about recycling can easily play a part into this new area of your life.
When children go away to college, one thing that will be required is a new computer and accessories. The kid may already have a computer, which is great. However, many do not or the one the kid already owns may not meet university standards. What can one do?
If someone has a computer that is in good condition but just not shiny and new, donating the computer to a fellow student or university programme is a great way to be rid of the old equipment. The same can be said of those looking for a new computer system but cannot afford the price tag affixed to the latest model.
For those willing make the investment into a new system, consider greener alternatives for equipment as well as other dorm room necessities.
“Then look for items made out of recycled content, like cotton, hemp, bamboo and cork, and try to stay away from plastics. You can get substitutes for all kinds of items, like hangers and rugs,” she says. “Go more organic for bedding and towels, like 100 percent cotton. They cost more and don’t always come in the extra long twin for dorm rooms, but you can opt for an organic pillow, at least,” said Amy Provenzano, executive director of environmental stewardship at Stony Brook University.
