Household Waste Centre to Undergo Renovation

Beginning in September, the Household Waste Recovery Centre (HWRC) in Morpeth will close in order to undergo significant renovations designed to increase its overall size. The facility is scheduled to be operational in February 2009.

The new and improved design will be a split level which will save users from climbing stairs. In addition, this will allow an increase in the amount of recyclables processed at the site. The floor plan will have a higher safety profile, providing separate access points to improve traffic flow and decrease congestion currently caused by individual and public collection vehicles. The plan will also permit the site to remain open even during the time when skips are emptied. There will also be improved lighting which will allow the site to remain open longer hours in the winter months.

Five months may seem like a long time to close a recycling facility but the scope of the project requires time for the extensive construction. Because the extent of the work is so large, it is impossible to refit the facility and remain open to the public at the same time.

The Morpeth HWRC remodel is a segment of a year long, £12m investment designed to upgrade or replace 11 of the 13 HWRCs throughout the county. It is also part of a campaign focused on ensuring a reduction in the amount of Northumberland’s waste being sent to landfill by 2012. The renovations are overseen by SITA UK, a waste management company.
