WEEE Plastics Come Under WRAP Analysis

Waste and Resources Action Programme (Wrap) has announced that it wishes to run a trial to determine the best ways to recycle commingled Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) plastics.

In addition to the organisation’s other plastics trials performed earlier this year, WRAP intends to investigate recycling techniques involving commercial mixed plastics and mixed plastics packaging. WRAP’s hope is to use the trial’s results to present information regarding large scale techniques on sorting the materials.

The report WRAP hopes to publish will be a complementary piece to a report published by WRAP last year, titled: “Developing Bulk WEEE Polymer Separation and Analysis Techniques”.

In another vein, WARP hopes to develop research and development programmes focused on improving the recyclability of plastic milk bottles. Hopefully, the project will be able to develop appropriate ink, label and adhesive systems to be used on the plastic milk bottles that will be environmentally friendly and not contaminate the plastics during the recycling process.

WRAP is accepting applications for the programmes. The organisation has published application deadlines as shown below:

*Research and development to improve the recyclability of mixed plastics packaging: closing date 15 August 08

*Commercial Scale Mixed Plastics Recycling Trial: closing date 25 August 08

*WEEE Plastics Recycling: Demonstration of Further Techniques for Separation of Mixed WEEE Plastics: closing date 1 September 08

*Research and development to improve the recyclability of plastic milk bottles: closing date 12 September 08
