Residents of Weston are being called upon by CLIC Sargent, a children’s cancer charity, to donate their old or unwanted mobile phones for their recycling programme.
As with many charities, CLIC will be able to use donated phones to raise much needed funds for its organisation. For every old handset donated, £3 will be credited to CLIC. Phones with high value will be put up for sale through CLIC’s eBay store.
According to the CLIC website, “Every day 10 families are told their child has cancer. As the UK’s leading children’s cancer charity, CLIC Sargent is the only organisation to offer them all round care and support. That’s because we’re there every step of the way.”
CLIC’s services include providing various medical and family specialists, Homes from Home, special social care and family support, and aftercare services including bereavement support and research.
Weston staff has set a projected target of collecting 300 phones in two months. The amount raised from 300 phones would allow the organisation to fund two family support workers for one week.
Jay Hannam, CLIC’s eBay store manager, said: “I expect there must be at least one old mobile phone that is no longer in use tucked away in everyone’s home.
“The money raised will help fund vital clinical, psychosocial, emotional and financial care to support families facing the unimaginable.”
