MobileMuster’s ‘Old Phones, More Trees’ campaign is responsible for creating a programme in which Brisbane residents donate old and unwanted mobile phones for recycling and thereby contribute to an initiative to plant 100,000 native trees across the Australia. The success of the programme will help to ensure that formerly degraded areas of the country will once again bloom with native trees.
The campaign was carried out by MobileMuster, the official recycling program of the mobile phone industry, and partner with Landcare Australia, the company that pledged to plant trees on behalf of consumers who turned in mobile phones for recycling purposes. The event was centered on the second annual World Environment Day. Overall, the campaign collected 104,543 mobile phones. As a result, Landcare Australia will plant 100,000 native trees throughout Australia within the next 12 months.
Rose Read, Manager of MobileMuster said: “Not only will over degraded areas of Australia benefit from the campaign, but MobileMuster will recover 90% of the plastics and metals found in recycled mobile phones, batteries and accessories, such as gold, silver and copper and reuse them to make new products such as jewellery, stainless steel products and plastic fence posts”
“The campaign’s amazing result highlights that Brisbane residents are committed to environmental initiatives such as mobile phone recycling and are passionate about protecting our local environment,” said Ms Read.
“The planting of native trees in degraded areas of the country will help restore biodiversity, reduce global warming, reduce soil salinity, improve water quality and help to conserve Australia’s natural habitats,” said Brian Scarsbrick, Landcare Australia CEO.
