A huge demand for wheelie bins in Poland, Estonia and Germany is reportedly the cause of a shortage in wheelie bins for Britain. Councils throughout the country have been informing residents that replacement wheelie bins will not available for several months and that bins for new homes may take even longer.
There have been rumors that a bin factory fire somewhere in either Poland, France or England is allegedly responsible for the shortage.
Residents in various parts of the country are being given less than satisfactory suggestions on what to do in the meantime. In Derbyshire, thousands of residents have been instructed to stack black rubbish bags in their gardens, an action which will surely encourage the presence of foxes and flies. New homeowners in Lancashire may face up to an eight month waiting period to receive bins. The council in Lewisham is recommending that residences share bins until November or later.
“Unfortunately, the shortage of bins is affecting the whole of the UK, and not just Lewisham,” said local councillor Susan Wise.
Robert Bull, managing director of online retailer wheeliebins.com, a company that supplies any amount of bins, said: “It is an absolute nightmare at the moment because we are not getting any through whatsoever.
It’s been getting steadily worse since May and supply has come to a virtual standstill, even for us, and we are supposed to be priority customers for the factories.”
“Factories are working on full production but the bins are being diverted to eastern Europe, where recycling campaigns are being set up.”
