A Spanish based firm had announced plans to build a £250m recycled paper mill in Trafford. Upon completion, the plant is expected to create 200 new jobs for residents.
Headquartered in Zaragoza, SAICA is a family-owned operation that has proposed using Partington Wharfside as the UK base for what it claims will be “the world’s most advanced recycled paper mill”. According to SAICA, the mill is expected to produce 400,000 tonnes of 100% recycled paper that will be used in the production of corrugated boxes. The company currently recycles more than 2m tonnes of paper per annum and has an employee base of 7,000 people at its sites throughout Spain, France, Italy, and Portugal.
This will not be the first site SAICA has opened in the UK. The company already operated two corrugated box facilities in the UK and one in Ireland. It has also struck a £100m deal to build Kent-based corrugated box facilities in the UK and Ireland.
The plans for the new facility, presented to the Trafford Metropolitan Borough Council last week, include a warehouse, external raw sewage area, an electricity and steam-generating plant and a number of workshops.
SAICA spokesman Kevin Whitmore, a UK-based spokesman for SAICA, said the Partington site was chosen primarily because of its location and easy access to transportation sources.
“SAICA has chosen Partington as we view it as a good place to do business,” he said. “Not only is the site close to local infrastructure and the wider motorway network, it also has excellent access to recovered paper generated across the North of England.
“Our £250m investment will be a significant boost to the local economy and a sign of confidence in the ongoing regeneration of the area.
