EBay and the UK onlinegrocer Ocado recently took awards at the OnLine Green Retail Awards (OLGAs) in a ceremony held at Kensington Roof Gardens in London. Five other online companies in the UK were also awarded. EBay, the massively popular online auction site, took first place in the Panel Award Winners division and received an award called the OLGA Grand Prix. According event organizer Interactive Media in Retail Group (IMRG), EBay has created a successful business model for the sale of used items that could be considered as “the ultimate in recycling.”
EBay, based in San Jose, California refers to iteself as the largest online marketplace in the world with more than 84 million users across the globe, including14 million regular users in the UK alone.
Independent online grocer Ocado was awarded the OLGA as a Large Retailer in the Consumer Award Winners division. IMRG applauded Ocado’s efforts in conservation and for its “pioneering work in delivery and grocery bag recycling.”
Ocado had humble beginnings in London, starting out eight years ago in a single rented room. In 2002, the company struck out to expand its customer base. Since that time, the company has made more than 8 million deliveries and currently delivers an average of 12,000 orders every day. The company has moved from that one room flat to a 23 acre fulfillment center in Hatfield.
Other award recipients include the Home Delivery Network, the U.K.’s biggest online carrier service, responsible for delivering nearly 300,000 packages per day; Celtic Sheepskin of Cornwall; Kelkoo, a wildly popular U.K.’s e-commerce comparison shopping website; and Dixons.co.uk, a firm that pecializes in home electronics and household appliances.
