Consumer Cellular Recycles 10m Phones

Consumer Cellular is a leading virtual network operator based in Portland, Oregon. As part of its commitment to the environment as well as the community, Consumer Cellular has developed an innovative recycling programme targeted toward old and unwanted mobile phones.

Since the programme’s inception in October 2007, the scheme has managed to keep 10,000 mobile phones from going to landfill and has turned those old handsets into $8,000. The money has been donated to the Portland based Doernbecher Children’s Hospital Foundation located at Oregon Health & Science University.

Reports show that approximately 150 million mobile phones are cast aside in the U.S. each year, yet less than 10% of those phones are sent to a recycling programme. In keeping with previous studies, a report by the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA) shows that 75% of Americans don’t know mobile phones can be recycled or what facilities are available for disposal.

“Every year, millions of cell phones are replaced with new phones and the old phones are not properly recycled,” said Consumer Cellular CEO John Marick. “Consumer Cellular recognizes that by encouraging our customers to recycle and making it easy for them, we can help the environment and our community.”

Consumer Cellular’s programme works in conjunction with recycling partner ReCellular, an award winning company that refurbishes and resells usable mobile phones. Phones that are no longer in working order are recycled or disposed of in accordance to stringent environmental standards
