The Merseyside Waste Disposal Authority has effectively reduced the number of bidders in competition for its two waste contracts that will have a combined total value of £3 billion. Previously nine firms were short-listed for the “Resource and Recovery PFI contract”.
That list has been reduced to four bidders while only two firms are being asked to bid on the second contract, which includes materials recycling facilities and CA sites. Those left in the running for the first contract includes development of an energy recovery facility for residual waste. The chosen bidders are: Shanks Group; energy firm Covanta; SITA UK; and the Resource from Waste Alliance - which a partnership between the water firm United Utilities and property management company Land Securities and Trillium.
The authority plans to call for final bids in August 2009, and the contract will be awarded in January 2010
SITA UK is also taking part in the bidding for the second contract, which involves the management of all of the region’s transfer stations, household waste recycling centres, and materials recycling facilities, as well as the development of new sites.
The bidders for the second contract are: SITA UK and Veolia. The Authority plans to award the contract in April 2009.
Referring to the finalisation of the two contracts, the chair of the MWDA, councillor Kevin Cluskey, said: “The Authority is very pleased with the progress of both contracts and the quality of the proposals that are being brought forward.
“We are confident that the next stages of the process will result in cost-effective and sustainable solutions to Merseyside and Halton’s future waste and recycling needs,” he added.
