Bolton Wood Recycler Under Fire

The Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service responded to a report of a fire in progress at Armstrong Environmental Services, on Chorley New Road in Horwich, near Bolton last week. Reports show that nearly 3,500 tonnes of recycled wood was damaged at the site, which collects waste for both residential and commercial clients. The height of one of the wood piles, which may have been as tall as 20 metres high, required firefighters to call for further assistance which required the use of two aerial platforms. Fortunately, there were no reported injuries.

The blaze was large enough that firefighters had to resort to obtaining additional water via pumps in a nearby brook as well as using street hydrants. Several members of the Armstrong staff joined in an attempt to protect the company facility by creating breaks with great hydraulic diggers. The diggers did help in protecting the buildings but a statement from the Fire and Rescue Service stated that “more of the timber has become involved, with flames and a large plume of smoke still visible at midnight”.

So far, no information has been released on the cause of the fire. At the time, a spokesman for the fire service said it was “too early” to establish what could have caused the fire. Greater Manchester Police have launched a joint investigation into the fire with the fire service and state that inquiries are “ongoing”.
