Approval has been granted to the Beddington Integrated Waste and Recycling Centre in south London. The Sutton council has given consent for the construction of the anaerobic digestion facility to begin.
Viridor Waste Management, the company responsible for managing the Beddington Integrated Waste and Recycling Centre, received the council’s permission to conduct alterations to the facility in order to increase the amount of waste currently handled by the facility. The facility currently handles 350,000 tonnes of waste. The alterations and addition of the AD facility will assist local authorities in complying with the government landfill diversion targets and will also assist in maximising “existing recycling and recovery services”.
The proposed alterations have been designed to fit within the facility’s existing boundaries. The site was introduced in 2004 after it received a £2 million grant from the London Recycling Fund. Currently, the facility is equipped to handle kitchen waste collected from client authorities.
The contract bid for the 75,000 tonnes-a-year facility will be sent out to ensure a competitive procurement which will also help to extend the facility’s operational period from 2015 to 2023.
Dan Cooke, external affairs manager at Viridor, said: “We are very pleased to have been granted consent for these leading-edge proposals. Beddington is an important integrated waste management site South of the River Thames and within the M25, operating for the long term.”
“These plans have been designed to meet the needs of our local authority and other customers and will serve to further improve essential waste and recycling services for the area. The decision follows an extensive local consultation exercise and we’ll continue to work closely with the local community,” he added.
