Recycling Action Yorkshire Undergoes Major Transformation

Recycling Action Yorkshire is set to undergo a major transformation, including a name change. As part of the transformation, the company will utilise a £9.8 million investment to expand its focus beyond recycling to encompass resource efficiency.

Recycling Action Yorkshire is part of the Yorkshire Forward development agency which operates as a not-for-profit business. The new name of the organisation will now be Resource Efficiency Yorkshire (REY).

REY will focus efforts on “aligning support and investment to increase demand from businesses for resource efficiency improvements, new environmental technologies and services, while at the same time boosting the number, and capacity, of service providers such as recyclers and consultants who could meet this demand”.

REY programme director Andrew Hartley is grateful for the opportunity and the funding, which came from two separate entities: £5.8 million came from REY’s parent organisation Yorkshire Forward; £4 million came from the European Regional Development Fund.

He said: “This funding is an unprecedented commitment to help the region’s businesses capitalise on cost reduction opportunities and growing environmental markets. Improving resource efficiency presents businesses with a unique opportunity to win contracts.

“REY foresees a future where we ‘decouple’ economic growth from resource use and its environmental impact,” he added. “But this can only be done by creating new businesses, jobs and attracting investment in new generation environmental businesses that service the needs of all businesses in the region that want to ‘green’ their operations.”
