BERR Takes Part in Examining WEEE Scheme

The BERR has announced that it is working closely with the Department of Business to examine the entire UK WEEE set up and infrastructure. A BERR spokesperson said the purpose of the exercise is permit “working closely with the Advisory Body and other key groups including producers, distributors, local authorities and small business representative bodies. The review will include producer compliance scheme and distributor take-back scheme requirements, data collection and submission, and the sharing of best practice across all elements of the system.”

Department of Business Minister Malcolm Wicks has also confirmed that a campaign targeted to create consumer awareness would be held later in the year. The hope is to “encourage the public to recycle their waste electronic and electrical equipment”. Currently, the number of households that recycle e-waste falls far short of projected targets.

He said: “It is important we now explain the WEEE system more clearly to the public through a consumer awareness campaign and we intend to embark on this toward the end of this year.

“Consumers should find it much easier to recycle and dispose of their electrical and electronic waste now,” he added.

The campaign was originally scheduled to launch sometime in the summer but was postponed so as not to interfere with Recycle Week, which was held in June. The delay will also allow recycling efforts to capitalise on the large amount of e-waste that will come forth before, during and after the Christmas holiday.
