Charnwood Offers Recycling Drive

In an attempt to raise recycling awareness among its residents, refuse collection vehicles throughout Charnwood have donned new adverts on their panels to promote local recycling initiatives. The panels are showing off their advertisements for Charnwood Borough Council’s brown bin project, a campaign aimed at recycling garden waste.

The panels, which measure 2.5m x 1.2m, are to be rotated every six months. They can be re-used year after year, adding another environmental element to the plan.

Approximately 17,000 Charnwood residents already subscribe to the programme, which collects nearly 4,500 tonnes of garden waste each year. The garden waste is then composted.

In March of this year, the Council devised a reduced payment plan if subscribers chose to pay by direct debit. The offer is still open to residents, who will be charged £15 by direct debit instead of the plan’s full price of £26 for the year.

Kath Kay, Charnwood Borough Council’s Waste Policy Manager, said: “The brown bin scheme is a more environmentally friendly way of managing compostable waste.

“All the contents of the brown bins are composted and used in landscaping projects and the restoration of brown-field sites.

Cllr Mike Preston, Charnwood Borough Council’s Cabinet Member for Environment, said: “Hopefully the new adverts will inspire many more Charnwood residents to take us up on this fantastic offer. The great thing is that they will be seen by people all around the area.”
