Residents in Providence, Rhode Islanders will have the opportunity to drop off used up and obsolete consumer electronics at a town-sponsored Electronics Recycling Day at North Providence High School.
Televisions, CPUs, computer monitors and other electronic equipment have been classified as hazardous waste. Traditionally, TVs would be dropped off at a central landfill and be expected to pay a $5 fee.
One benefit of Saturday’s high school based recycling day is that homeowners will be spared from making a special trip to the landfill.
Office Recycling Solutions, located in East Greenwich, will be on site to collect electronic items so that the components can be recycled, reused or disposed of properly. The only fees being charged on the day are an $8 charge for television sets and $22 for television with consoles. Residents may also dispose of other e-waste including keyboards, peripherals, accessories, wires, and plugs; laptops; video, audio, and DVD equipment and accessories; printers, copy and fax machines; landline telephones and mobile phones, and laser printers.
“This is an ideal way for residents to get rid of old, unused or obsolete electronic equipment in an environmentally safe way,” said Robert E. Nascimento, town recycling coordinator. “As new technology is introduced, we tend to upgrade computers, DVD players and office equipment. Then we are faced with throwing the old equipment in the trash,” a practice which is illegal in Rhode Island.
