In an attempt to promote environmental awareness, the Telecommunications Industry Association (TIA) has announced numerous initiatives designed to encourage the electronics industry to “get greener”.
To this end, the TIA has developed a regulatory tracking system called EIATRACK. The system is “a worldwide benchmark for intelligence and environmental product-oriented regulatory tracking and analysis,” that offers legal expertise worth millions of dollars. TIA’s e-waste recycling website is another source of information that contains a database of more than 2,000 recycling centres throughout the United States.
As part of the tracking and analysis processes, EIATRACK compiles information on regulatory legislation from 110 international jurisdictions, including Europe, Asia, and South America. The system also provides analysis from technical and technical experts from a wide range of disciplines, including law and science.
“TIA’s investment in green initiatives provides vision and adds value for our members as the ICT industry continues to respond to worldwide environmental and regulatory issues affecting business,” said TIA’s Grant Seiffert in a statement.
Reuters reported that the TIA is also campaigning manufacturers to produce more energy efficient equipment, such as switches, routers, and other types of network equipment because the costs of maintaining data centers and networks is on the rise.
“We’ve made it clear to them that we need breakthroughs in those areas,” John Donovan, CTO of AT&T Inc., told Reuters. “We’re not going to go out and just buy features and capabilities without looking at the total cost of ownership and the environmental impacts.”
