Samsung is Recycling Inspiration

Samsung has taken yet another giant step in its environmental responsibility. In 2004, Samsung started a Green Take-back Programme designed to accept used toner cartridges. The voluntary programme was targeted primarily to corporations and businesses yet offered no incentives for the participants. Apparently Samsung has decided that this programme wasn’t enough.

During the recent Samsung Printing InspirAsia Tour in Bali, the toner recycling programme was one of the subjects emphasized by company executives. During the tour, Jang Jae Lee, Senior Vice President of Samsung Electronics’ Digital Printing Division’s Strategic Marketing Team, discussed the topics that inspire the Korean company. Lee explained that while design, partnerships and optimization are important elements to the company, Samsung is also fully committed to being Green. Samsung has been the recipient of a number of awards from organizations in the U.S., Germany, and South Korea for its eco friendly efforts.

Byungrok Park, vice president of the Digital Printing Division of the sales and marketing group in China and Southeast Asia, said that Samsung carefully follows environmentally sound processes when manufacturing its printers. Park mentioned that when Samsung “develops its products, it follows international guidelines”. Park reiterated that consumers will not find lead in Samsung printers and that staying green is one of the company’s top priorities, “from product birth to disposal”.

In order to attract more overseas customers to its Take Back programme, however, Samsung has devised a system offering rebates to larger businesses if they return their empty cartridges. The incentives will vary from country to country but Samsung feels that the offer will encourage companies to recycle.
