Apple and HP Lead Green IT

A new survey conducted by GreenFactor has shown that Apple and HP are the leaders in green IT. This information isn’t all that surprising but some of the other findings are.

First of all, it should be known that the opinions of the participants in the survey varied widely due to geographic location. For example, India is the most progressive country in the world when it comes to placing a high value on purchasing the “most environmentally beneficial products possible”. Nearly 25% of German participants felt that buying eco-friendly products have “no real impact on the environment”.

While the survey shows that the green IT market still has a long way to go in educating consumers, there is a bright side. More than 70% of survey respondents said they would probably/definitely buy green if the benefits could be proven and the cost was justifiable.

The companies who have had the most success with green marketing strategies are Apple, Microsoft, IBM, HP, Sony, Intel, and Dell. This simply means that when people think of green IT, these are the names that come to mind.

As with other perceptions, thoughts on the greenest companies were affected by region. In the U.S. HP, Dell, IBM and Apple were at the top; U.K. respondents ranked Apple, Sony, and Dell as being the greenest; in Japan the highest ranking companies were: Sony, Fujitsu, NEC, and Toshiba.

Survey results also showed how green IT perceptions change depending on where you are on the corporate food chain.
