Manx Telecom Promotes Mobile Phone Recycling

It is often said that children are our future. Therefore, it makes perfect sense that Manx Telecom would join together with the Department of Education and the Department of Local Government and the Environment to place mobile phone recycling bins into schools across the Isle of Man. Kids tend to know the most about phones and other electronic gadgets, so it’s a wise move to involve them in recycling and conservation efforts.

The bins will be on site at various schools around the Island, encouraging students to place old or broken phones and their chargers in the bin for reuse or recycling. The proceeds from the initiative will go toward the Manx Wildlife Trust.

Manx Telecom has been involved with recycling old mobile phones since 2004. When a customer returns a phone, it is examined to determine its level of usability. The mobile phones that are worth saving are refurbished and sent for use in developing countries. Those phones which are beyond repair are disposed of safely and responsibly so that no harmful elements are put into landfill.

Current studies show that there are over 75,000 mobile phones in use all around the Island and a great many more that are either broken or tossed aside somewhere.

Another of Manx Telecom’s projects includes a recycling program aimed directly at their customer base: “For every mobile handset that Manx Telecom customers return for recycling, a donation is made towards the cost of a tree planting scheme at the Isle of Man’s new Hospice, currently under construction. We aim to plant up to 200 trees on the new site.”
