Heidelberg Focuses on Eco Friendly Ink Systems

Heidelberg, the world leader in printing presses and digital technology, recently used the stage at drupa 2008 to announce that it is expanding its Saphira range of consumables. Based in Germany, drupa 2008 is the world’s largest printing and graphic arts exhibition in the world. While at drupa 2008, Heidelberg will also launch an extended system solution for its InkLine automated ink supply system, which will now be known as InkStar. InkStar cartridges manufactured from recycled materials, which corresponds well with Heidelberg’s two-stage cutting and shredding system, which will appear at drupa, can dispose of empty cartridges while reducing waste as much as 70 percent. The system, which was based on the technology developed for the recycling of waste paper and e-waste, has already proven to be successful in numerous print shops.

The Saphira brand of inks marketed globally by Heidelberg will be extended so that print shops in Europe will have a choice between composite cartridges as well as the two-kilogram plastic-only containers that are currently available. Composite cartridges are especially eco friendly since they have a plastic valve and plunger and a cardboard cylinder made almost entirely from recycled paper. Heidelberg credits extensive testing and direct customer support for its ability to successfully launch both cartridge types in the relevant markets. Heidelberg realises that because different countries may have widely varying legal and official regulations regarding ink cartridges disposal, it is important that print shops throughout the world have the ability to choose between the two types of cartridge.
