The UK is to get better recycling plants.

Two new recycling plants are planned to be built near Preston in Lancashire in the United Kingdom.

This is where all the items that can be recycled will now be sent, including potato peelings, clothes, kettles, glass, paper, cardboard, plastics, light bulbs and even pet litter. It is hoped that these new facilities will help the 1.4 million people around Lancashire to recycle more of their waste.

The facilities in place are currently able to handle around 50 per cent of household waste. The new facilities will be able to handle around 70 per cent, and it is hoped that this will increase to the facilities eventually being able to handle 80 per cent of all household waste for the area.

The two plants are in the early stages of preparation. They will be run by an Australian company called Global Renewables, whose first plant got up and running in Sydney in 2004.

The new plants will use a new and patented technology that can sort waste as well as decontaminate it before it is turned into a high grade compost.

Methane gas that is produced by the bacteria that feed on the waste will be used to fuel the plant and return electricity to the national grid.

The problem with the current Mechanical biological treatment plants is that they have not always been able to convert the waste into a product that they could market. One of the main problems with this form of composting on this level has been contamination.
