Greenstar UK has just purchased Leicester Paper Processors, an East Midlands based recycling firm. The purchase will add a 45,000 tonne-a-year MRF to Greenstar’s rapidly growing network around the UK.
Leicester Paper Processors (LPP) is a 40 year old company based in Coalville, Leicestershire. The company currently operates a three-acre freehold site which is comprised of 50,000 square feet of covered space. On average, LPP handles approximately 45,000 tonnes of recyclables a year, including paper, plastics, metal and glass. LPP also offers recycling of confidential paper-based data for commercial clients.
Greenstar’s latest acquisition came just two months after the company bought Firbank, a Bedfordshire-based commercial recycling company.
Ian Wakelin, Greenstar UK’s Chief Executive, has his sights set on purchasing additional facilities in the near future. The Irish-owned Greenstar intends to use these facilities to “feed into a network of ’super-MRFs’” which are slated to be developed near major urban centres. The first 300,000 tonne-a-year capacity centre, which is currently undergoing commissioning, will be developed at Aldridge, just outside Birmingham.
A spokesperson for Greenstar recently reported that the company intends to develop links between a number of MRF facilities. “There’ll be a spine of MRFs echoing Greenstar’s operational areas,” the spokesman said.
“They’ll do the initial processing, cleaning, bulking and batching up and then that will go to the super-MRFs.
“Some of the smaller MRFs will process materials to a high enough standard for sale to secondary markets, but the majority will go to Aldridge,” he added.
