How I know if a product is truly green

When you are purchasing eco-friendly products for your home, only reading the info on the label is not enough, consumer advocates explain. Checking for third-party certification is better. Several common ones:

• Green Seal – Its goal is to decrease the environmental impact tied to the use, production, and disposal of services and products.
• Designed for the Environment – Invented by the EPA (US Envir¬onmental Protection Agency) to make clear that certain products contain environmental-friendly ingredients.
• Energy Star – A certification by EPA whose aim is to cut back greenhouse gas emissions via power efficiency.
• Forest Stewardship Council – Products bearing the FSC symbol are guaranteed to contain wood products harvested from a well-managed and certified forest.
• Water Sense – This logo certifies toilets, faucets and other water-efficient products.
• LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) – Aims to promote indoor environmental quality, sustainable site development, energy efficiency, water savings, and sustainable products selection.
