Haringey Council introduces full mixed recycling

Haringey Council is working to cut their area’s landfill waste drastically and as a result, they are offering a full mixed recycling service to more than 20,000 homes in Haringey.  The council is hoping to be able to provide the full recycling service to over 70,000 households by the end of June.

Previously, most houses in the borough were able to recycle paper, cans and glass. Now residents can add plastic bottles and cardboard to the contents of their green box. In addition, every week, they will be able to have their food and garden waste collected.

The new service is designed to assist the council reach its recycling targets. By 2011, Haringey would like to see 35 per cent of all household waste recycled or composted, which is an increase of 25 per cent from the current recycling rates.

Councillor Brian Haley, cabinet member for environment and conservation, said: “Haringey is now recycling more than 12 times more household waste than it was just seven years ago.

“But we need to keep up the momentum.”

“I hope the 20,000 new households receiving our full service will now be encouraged to recycle more materials more regularly, and so help us continue to reduce the amount of waste in this borough that’s sent unnecessarily to landfill.”

Doorstep collection will now be available for full mixes recycling for every home in Haringey. Only a few houses are not getting the service due to their location on streets which are not large enough to accommodate the collection vehicles, but the issue is being examined and will be resolved in the future so that collection is available to everyone.
