A new inspiration to recycle has just moved into the Bullring shopping centre in Birmingham. Thousands of soda cans have been used to recreate the iconic city statue in an effort to encourage more local people to recycle.
The aluminium replica of the famous bull is located next to the bronze original where it will be seen by thousands of shoppers every day. It is one of several sculptures which were unveiled as part of Recycling Week.
Pamina Stewart is the local artist responsible for the creation. She said at the end of the week, the statue could be entirely recycled.
She said: “The frame underneath is made of willow and bamboo because they’re obviously sustainable materials.
“And then I strung the cans on top so at the end when they have finished with it they will be able to cut the string and recycle all the cans.”
The statues, and other activities across the country fro Recycle Week, were launched by WRAP, a non-profit company which assists individuals and corporations increase their recycling.
In Gateshead, 10,000 soft drink cans were used to create a replica of the Angel of the North. In London, the sculpture of the Big Ben measured six metres.
