Recycle for Bradford

Residents of Bradford will soon have a daily reminder to recycle more often. A five meter tall “Recycle for Bradford” sign is being officially unveiled on Monday to kick off Recycle Week and remind residents to increase their recycling rates.

The sign has already been stationed on an embankment at the Cottingley end of the Bingley relief road. The position of the sign is designed to target commuters on their way to and from work with the recycling message.

The sign was created by the street scene service of Bradford Council and will be unveiled at the opening of Recycling Week.

This year’s theme for Recycling Week is “just one more thing.” The idea behind the theme is to push people to recycle just one more item a little more often.

The sign is just one element to a week long campaign. The Council’s recycling team plans to hit the streets with their message, touring on road shows and talking to shoppers at local supermarkets with their recycling tips.

On Monday, shoppers in Invegate, Bradford can pick up free Bradford Council bags for life. On Tuesday, the council will be holding a recycling demonstration for shoppers at the Baildon Co-operative group store.

On Wednesday, the recycling team will be located at Bingley Town Square handing out free reusable shopping bags. On Thursday at the Shipley ASDA store, they will be accompanied by a model wearing clothes made from recycled materials.

Councillor Anne Hawkesworth, the executive member for environment and culture, said: “We are hoping the activities next week will encourage residents to look at what they currently recycle and think about adding just one more thing to the list.

“Whether it be aluminium cans, or glass bottles, paper or garden waste, we can all do that little bit more to help the environment and reduce the amount of waste we send to landfill.”
