Wirral emerges top in recycling

The council of Wirral has beaten all other councils in Merseyside to rise to the top in the local authorities recycling table.

Statistics reveal that in Wirral, close to thirty two per cent of the household waste underwent recycling between April and December in 2007. This positioned the borough at the top of the league beating four other local authorities.

The increase in the rate of recycling is attributed to the introduction of grey recycling bins and an alternate weekly collection after the borough signed a new waste contract with Biffa. In the previous year only thirteen and a half per cent of the household waste underwent recycling.

The director of technical services at Wirral Council, David Green, hailed the improvements which would be sweet music to the ears of the residents. Mr. Green attributed the success to the efforts of the residents which he said had not come as a surprise since the borough had expected massive increase in the rates of recycling the moment the residents became familiar with the system and the changes that had been effected.

The director of technical services at Wirral Council further expressed the borough’s gratitude to the residents for supporting the recycling initiative and appealed to them to go on with the recycling scheme to maintain their position as the top cream of recycling in Meyerside.

Promises by the borough to keep on enhancing the recycling scheme and maintain their lead in the recycling table have been made. To that effect a recycling initiative for educational institutions has been introduced throughout the borough.
