The re-evaluation exercise of the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment Directive involving members of the public has been initiated by the European Union.
Until the fifth of June this year, interested parties can present their views all geared towards raising the efficiency and effectiveness of the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment Directive in attaining its targets as well as getting rid of any unwarranted expenses that the directive imposes on public bodies, businesses, consumers, non-profits and local government.
Interested parties are requested to contribute their opinions on areas such as possible amendment to the national targets for Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment collection, reuse and recycling, with the intention of initiating a new mandatory target before the eve of next year.
Presently the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment Directive targets a collection of 4 kilograms per capita on an annual basis. Information recently released by the Environment Agency indicated that the rate of collection in 2007 in the United Kingdom surpassed the target.
Interested parties are also required to deliberate on the range of the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment Directive since there is need to spell out the products categorised under Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment besides considering the possibilities of expanding the directive in order to accommodate more electrical and electronic products.
Also to be deliberated on is manufacturer responsibility provisions. The public consultation will also look into ways of making the treatment of Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment better and possibly looking into ways of having one universal treatment standard throughout Europe.
