The district councillors in West Berkshire are gearing up to dramatically increase the local recycling rate. In a bid to do so they will be distributing free green wheelie bins to all residents over the course of the next three months.
The green garden waste service will allow residents to decrease the amount of waste heading to landfills by composting grass cuttings, hedge trimmings and other garden waste.
Geoff Findlay, West Berkshire’s executive councillor for environment and waste said: “This is an important part of the new scheme as it will give residents the opportunity to recycle green waste from their homes.
“This improved service will greatly reduce the need for people in West Berkshire to travel to recycle their waste which is yet another plus point for the environment.”
The project will be conducted in several stages throughout the summer months. In addition to the recycling bin, community residents will also get an information pamphlets full of information about how to use the bins effectively. The package will also include information on recycling dates and when the service will begin.
Veolia Environmental Services, a company which was recently awarded a 25 year contract with the district council for waste, will be carrying out the kerbside collection.
Keith McGurk, the environmental services’ general manager for Veolia said: “Enabling people to recycle even more from home will quickly reduce the amount of waste sent to landfill and increase the recycling rate, bringing us even closer to our targets of recycling 49 per cent of rubbish and reducing landfill to less than 20 per cent.
“This is a win-win for both the people of West Berkshire and the long term future of our environment.”
