Edinburgh is recycling more waste now than ever before according to new figures released this week.
In the last 12 months, the Scottish capital recycled 27.4 per cent of its waste, an increase from just 24 per cent the year before.
Edinburgh’s environment leader, Councillor Robert Aldridge said: “The figures show Edinburgh residents are really on board with the Reduce Reuse Recycle message.
“Not only did we beat our recycling rate target of 27 per cent, but the amount of household waste being presented for general collection also dropped by 4.7 per cent, reflecting the ongoing success of our waste minimisation strategy.”
Aldridge urged community residents to keep up the good work and improve recycling rates even further in the future. “While we are delighted by the progress so far, there is no room for complacency,” he said.
“The council is fully committed to increasing recycling rates in the city and we are working towards our 40 per cent target, which we aim to achieve by 2012.”
