Asda teams with Pendle Council for Recycle Week

Recycle Week starts on June 2nd and will see Pendle Council partner with Asda in order to celebrate the event. Council members and staff at the Colne store will join forces in order to better educate community members about recycling while they shop.

The foyer of the store will host a recycling exhibition for the duration of Recycle Week. Staff in the store will be available to answer questions from shoppers about recyclable items and recycling locations.

Environmentally friendly products will be on sale all week including items made from recycled plastics like pens, pencils and pencil sharpeners.

The store and council will hold a recycling competition, and plan to award a hamper full of green goods from Asda to the winner.

Councillor John David, who represents the council’s operational Services team, said: “We’re doing what we can during Recycle Week to remind our residents to recycle whatever they can.”

Earlier this month, Asda announced that it would be removing all single carrier bags from 355 stores across the country, attempting to cut down on plastic bag use. The store first trialed the use of reusable bags in six stores and found high sales of the bags. During the trail, Asda said the stores used 40 per cent fewer bags and saw sales of reusable bags go up by 1200 per cent.

On June 1st, to coincide with Recycle week, all plastic bags will be removed from the view of shoppers, encouraging people to buy an Asda’s “bag for life” or use their own cloth shopping bag.
