Coca-Cola Enterprises and Waste & Resources Action Programme have teamed up together to establish 80 recycling stations across the UK. The ‘on-the-go’ Recycling Zones will be in place and ready to educate the population about recycling by 2011.
On Saturday, the first zone was launched at Thorpe Park, a popular amusement park. Other recycling zones in the future will be located at Alton Towers, another amusement park, as well as at popular travel hubs and shopping centres.
Member of Parliament and Minister for Waste, Joan Ruddock, attended the launch and was enthusiastic about the project.
“With a target of increasing the national recycling rate to 40% by 2010, programmes such as the Recycling Zone from Coca-Cola Enterprises are vital to the UK hitting its targets,” he said. “I very much welcome this initiative and hope the Recycling Zone programme, which I am delighted to launch today, ensures people recycle more, at home and on-the-go.”
Thorpe Park now has six recycling points, all of which are marked with clear signs.
Vice President of Coca-Cola Enterprises Limited Erika Coghlan has said, “People often have good intentions but convenience is key. We wanted to put the Recycling Zones in locations where people need them when they’re on-the-go - and make it easy for them to choose to recycle.”
