Becoming environmentally friendly has gotten quite complicated recently, leaving many consumers eager to help out but unsure of the best way to proceed. For example, should bottles and cans scheduled for recycling be washed out, or will doing so waste more money than it’s worth?
Depending on where you’re recycling and what’s being recycled there may be different rules about how to prepare your material for the recycling bin. It is generally recommended to give most cans a rinse before putting them in the recycling bin, as it helps make the recycling process more efficient.
Although a rinse is a good idea, there is no need to go about scrubbing and washing all your old cans. Most recycling facilities will get rid of large impurities before they begin the recycling process, getting rid of anything a good rinse won’t.
Heating up water to wash the cans, or using soap to scrub them isn’t necessary and will waste energy.
Its always a good idea to leave stained and soiled items out of the recycling. Anything with oil residue, like pizza boxes, need to have the oily parts removed before they can be recycled. In the case of pizza boxes, just rip off the sections of cardboard that are greasy and put the rest in the recycling.
