Highways Agency goes green

The motto which made the Highways Agency so good at being green was “why can’t you recycle?” Instead of asking “what to recycle?” the group focused on finding facilities for various types of recycling and has succeeded on a large scale.

By asking, “Why can’t you recycle?” the group attacked barriers to recycling and set up recycling facilities for cardboard, paper, toner cartridges, batteries, CDs and mobile phones.

Over the last two years, the Agency has successfully reduced the amount of paper used in its office by half and reduced the number of printers, copers and scanners in the office by 350 units.

Another way the Highways Agency has gotten greener is by investigating suppliers and partners and preferring to do business with organizations which take their environmental impact seriously.

Denise Plumpton, the director of information at the Highways Agency, said: “We need positive action to reduce our environmental impact, to meet the challenging targets for reduced energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions, and to increase the use of renewable energy.”

The Highways Agency is also looking for others to get involved with clean transportation. Plumpton urges people to carefully plan their trips to avoid getting caught in congestion and lines which increase the environmental impact of their journey. Consumers can also take advantage of the recycling facilities provided by the Highways Agency.
