Westminster council to recycle cars

London’s Westminster council recently announced a bold move that will make some environmentalists grin and some car owners cringe. The borough is planning to recycle 50 cars, taking them from the worst parking offenders in the area and giving them to the green motoring scheme regardless of their make, model or value.

According to the Westminster council, almost 85 per cent of a car can now be recycled using modern means. Plastics in the vehicle can be turned into a variety of household items. Tires can be used to build playgrounds and glass can be used to make a new aggregate for roads.

“Rather than rusting away in our car pound we are pleased that these vehicles earmarked for crushing will be recycled and put to good use and in doing so will help the environment in the process,” says the City Council’s Director of Parking, who seems rather pleased with the plan.

Regardless of whether the parking offender owns a luxury BMW or a second hand Buick, those who fail to pay their parking fines in London may lose their car and once it’s recycled, it will be gone for good.
