Half the population recycling electronics

A new study by T-Mobile has found that less than half of Britons say they recycle their electronic waste including mobile phones, kettles and toasters.

Only one in every 20 Britons call themselves “green” and 58 per cent said they could do more for the environment.

About 75 per cent of respondents said that they use low-energy light bulbs in their home and additionally turn off their electronics in order to save electricity.

The study found that Britons have generally good environmental behaviour at home, but that electronic recycling is a weak point.

The majority of those surveyed (88 per cent) said that they recycle waste from their household but the best recyclers were in the over 55 age group where nine out of ten said they were committed recyclers of household waste.

T-Mobile’s corporate responsibility manager, Allison Murray, said: “It is encouraging to see that so many Brits are doing their bit for the environment. But we know that big businesses should be doing as much as possible to reduce their impact on the planet, as well as encouraging their customers to do the same.”

T-Mobile commissioned the survey in order to highlight the company’s mobile reuse and recycling program.

“We are making it as easy as possible for customers to do their bit for the environment with the help of our phone recycling scheme,” explained Murray.

“Anyone with an old phone can pick up a recycling bag at a T-Mobile store, and customers receive one automatically in their new phone box.

“All they need to do is remove the Sim card, put the old handset inside the recycling bag and post it to T-Mobile free of charge.”

According to T-Mobile, consumers can trade in their handset for up to £80, which can also be donated to the charity of their choice. The used phones are either refurbished and resold or are recycled.

When recycling a phone, customers are urged to reformat the device so that their personal information remains personal.
