Northamptonshire County Council has declared the next two weeks the Reuse Fortnight. As part of the event, women are being urgedĀ to bring in their bras. Bra Amnesty Days have been declared in an effort to encourage women to donate their bras to a worthy charity rather than throw them in the bin.
Oxfam, a well known international charity, recently changed their policy on second hand clothing and has begun accepting donations of bras for developing countries. As a result, the Northamptonshire County Council is encouraging women to donate.
Ben Smith, a council member and cabinet member for the environment, said: “Even though this is a completely new and unusual event being run by the county council, it’s one which has a clear message to people across the county.
“If people donate their unwanted items to Bra Amnesty, they are not only helping developing countries but also helping to prevent unwanted waste building up on landfill sites.”
A travelling bank will be collecting a range of items from various locations around the County, encouraging households to recycle goods. The travelling bank will target commercial enterprises in order to encourage consumers to change their shopping habits.
Oxfam is accepting bra donations all the time, at all of its shops and libraries.
