New technology is the way forward for Sims Recycling Solutions. It plans to roll out its new technology to all of its eight European plants, including the Manchester plant.
The Waste Electronic and Electrical Equipment (WEEE) plastics technology means that it is now possible to separate plastic from other substances, and therefore it is easier to recycle household devices.
This new technology, developed by Sims Recycling Solutions, allows the plants to separate almost 100 percent clean plastic from the waste electronics and household goods that it recycles.
This technology has been four years in the making and development. The system can now break down the plastic content of household devices and waste electronics into small pieces. These pieces are around the size of a cornflake. It then refines them into individual polymers.
The UK managing director of Sims Recycling solutions, Mr Graham Davy, said that “The plastics from WEEE are often contaminated with heavy metals or brominated flame retardants and conventional techniques do not allow the separation of the hazardous substances, making the whole recycling process very difficult.” He added that “The new technology we have pioneered means that this contamination issue can finally be addressed and now we can produce flakes that are 99 per cent unmixed.”
It is planned that this technology will be present in Sims eight plants across Europe, and it is hoped that Sims will exceed targets for recycling electronics set out by the Waste Electronic and Electrical Equipment Directive.
